Statue of Unity, located in Gujarat, India, is the tallest statue in the world. It was inaugurated on the 31st of October 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is the man behind initiating the idea of building this statue.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel played a significant role in driving the British out of the country and building the nation. It was he, who took the initiative to unite all the 562 princely states of the country to build the Republic of India. He was known for his strength and determination and was given the title of the ‘Iron Man of India’.
PM Modi decided to build Sardar Patel’s statue as a mark of respect to this noble soul. He came up with the plan of building the tallest statue in the world so that Sardar Patel’s contributions to our nation will not only be remembered by the Indians, but even throughout the world. By building this statue he aimed to ensure that the contribution of this eminent leader is cherished for years and years to come. It was given the name, the Statue of Unity as Vallabhbhai  Patel played a vital role in both pre and post independence India..
Talking about the Statue of Unity, PM Modi said, “My vision is to develop the place as a source of inspiration for ages to come”.
The enormous statue required huge funds. It was constructed by a Public Private Partnership model. Most of the investment for its construction was done by the Gujarat Government. Contributions of funds were also made by Public Sector Undertakings under Corporate Social Responsibility scheme.
Statue of Unity, a symbol of unity, strength and peace, is open for public. People from far away are visiting Gujarat, just to have a view of this huge edifice.
